The Association of Applied Sport Psychology recognizes and promotes the role of both mental performance and mental health in athletes’ quest to function and achieve performance excellence. Mental health is a part of, not separate from, athlete health (NCAA, 2021). Mental health exists on a continuum, with thriving on one end of the spectrum, known as mental wellness, and on the other end of the spectrum, significant disorder in a person’s functioning and performance over time, known as mental illness (see model above). In the area of sport and performance, Certified Mental Performance Consultants® (CMPC®) are trained and credentialed to work with athletes and performers to address optimizing their mental performance with strategies to help them thrive in their sport. Some CMPCs® are also clinically trained and can diagnose and treat mental illness.
I am a Certified Mental Performance Consultant but I am not clinically trained. If you or your athlete's needs fall on the left side of the spectrum, please consult a mental health professional.
Valston Coaching provides four basic services, as described below. If at any point, you would like to find out more details about any of my services, please book a FREE 15-min Consultation call to learn more.
I offer personal coaching in 20, 30 or 60 min increments. A private coaching session will be one-on-one with Valerie Alston via Zoom. Val is trained in behavior change and motivational techniques. Rather than acting as the expert and giving advice, I will create an environment that gives you permission to take the lead. I adhere to what you want, not what I think you should want. You determine your unique goals through a process of self-discovery and accountability, and I facilitate change at a pace set by you.
Online self-paced education courses that combine video instruction and activities to help you build skills in your desired area. You get continuous access and can re-watch/ re-engage with the material as many times as you want. All courses are delivered via the Toughness Trainer app.
I also work with teams to deliver sport psychology or mental toughness workshops tailored to the team's needs. I offer team building activities that build trust, cohesion and communication skills.
Mental Skills training makes a great addition to any camp by helping athletes leverage mental skills to learn more and develop quicker. Mental training at camps can take many forms. I can attend in person (or possibly via video calling) to provide instruction and drills for campers as a station or stand alone time period or I can provide access to one of my programs as part of the camp fees. If you are a coach or sports camp director, who would like to add a mental skills training component to your camp book a call to discuss options that make sense for your situation.
